A finish-Sweet Darling baby quilt

Last Monday, I put the binding on my Sweet Darling baby quilt, washed it, packed it nicely and gifted it to my friend who recently had a baby girl.
Here are some "not great" photos. Unfortunately it was a usual, super windy Canberra autumn day and I had to take indoor photos again.
I normally don't make gender specific quilts but with these fabrics, I couldn't imagine anything but a girly quilt.
I really like the matching pillow.
This is the first time that I used a decorative stitch for quilting. I first tried it on the pillow and liked the effect. I quilted the quilt in straight lines with the same stitch and framed the solid squares. It is not very visible on the quilt unless you look at it very closely. The back of the quilt shows it very well.
My friend loved the quilt and the pillow very much which made me very very happy. I forgot to take the photos of her gorgeous girl on the quilt because of so much excitement and squealing at that moment!!
Quilty details:
Fabrics:
Quilt top: Fancy Free layer cake-Riley Blake
Backing: Quilters' deluxe homespun
Binding: Fancy Free teal stripe
Size: 37.5 inches by 37.5 inches unwashed

Hope you liked the pair too!

Till next time,
Nurdan

Sweet Darling baby quilt

I am making a baby quilt. A very gender specific baby quilt, covered in lovely pinks- and I love it!I will call it 'Sweet Darling'. The fabrics are so lovely, and if you throw in a little baby girl too-not literally throwing the baby in of course-it makes a sweet darling.
I already finished piecing the top but I can't exactly show it to you yet. I am putting a few sneak peak photos for the moment. I am hoping to finish this by the end of next week. (Fingers crossed.)
And it left some decent size HSTs behind-bonus for a scrap project.
So, this is my WIP and I am linking up with Lee at Freshly Pieced for WIP Wednesday.

Baby bow ties finished!

I finished this quilt last week and took some very nice photos a few days ago. I now have some spare time to write a post about it, sshhhh....I am in the office!

Let me tell you a little bit about what this quilt went through :) I finished the quilt top a while ago. Just when I was ready to quilt it, my walking foot fell apart. Having been so committed to finishing it, I tried my satin stitch foot. As you can imagine, it didn't work. It pulled the backing, created pockets...In a moment of frustration, I put the whole thing away and didn't touch it until last week.
See how horrible it looks?
Then I took it out of the wardrobe; undid all the stitches, re-sandwiched it and finished it quickly. I did straight line quilting and also framed the bow ties in the same way. I used the side of my walking foot as a guide; so I didn't have to mark how far the quilting lines would be from the seams. It is much easier like this.
Here are some photos.
I tried a different binding method this time. It was a little challenging but I am very happy with how it turned out. You can find the tutorial at Red Pepper Quilts.
And this is how it looks after it is washed. So comfy and cozy :-)
I love the light blue and purple strips on the binding. I think they add character to the whole quilt.
The quilting around the bow ties make them stand out.
What frustrates you when quilting? Machine binding, not matchy-matchy points, or basting your quilt? Don't forget to leave a sweet comment :-)

Finished baby bow ties quilt top

After a post full of vent, it is time to share a couple of photos of my gorgeous baby bow ties quilt top!
and you need a tall husband to hold the quilt from behind the fence :-)

I had doubts about using such a light colour as background but I am absolutely in love with the outcome!
I might try making a scrappy, improvised back for this quilt and just do straight stitch quilting along the lines and around the triangles. What do you think?

Baby quilt progress

I had enough time during the past few days to do some sewing. Yesterday I finished sewing my squares in groups of two and they are ready to be assembled as a quilt top. All I need to do now is to match the colours, but...
...it can wait a little because I got caught up with making these super cute, mini pinwheels. They only measure 3"x3".
I made these with the off cuts of the main squares I sewed for the quilt top.

Can't help it, just don't like wasting :)

Happy sewing!

Making...

...a baby quilt.

We all came down with a bad gastro last week. Let me say; my face and the toilet got to know each other well...

I had so much Kona fabric in porcelain colour and was waiting for a project to use a decent chunk of it. I managed to cut 158- 3.5"x3.5" squares while I was still recovering and last night I cut 79- 2.5"x2.5" squares from some nice, colourful, leftover fabrics.

I must admit that I have doubts about using such a light colour as negative space, but I will still give it a go. This quilt will either be a nice one with bright colours standing out on the light background or all those colours will look like they are hanging in the air!
